Objectives

B.Sc. Microbiology
  • This course is designed for science majors who need a Microbiology course for their professional preparation, usually in an area of clinical application as pharmacy, nursing, physicianís assistant, dental assistant, and others. In addition, this course is required in the Biotechnology program. In order to enhance learning, the laboratory exercises are coordinated with lecture topics within each unit of study. Critical thinking and problem solving skills are developed in both laboratory and lecture

M.Sc. Microbiology
  • The objectives of postgraduate training are orienting the students for research towards higher degrees, or in the field of development of industrial processes. The expectations and opportunities available for Masters Students are responsible positions in technical production, planning and policy making, both in research and industry. Though all postgraduate students do not undertake research career, but all the researchers necessarily come from postgraduates in the subject and therefore postgraduate curriculum in all its different aspects such as design, implementation and evaluation needs necessarily to be research oriented. Imparting in-depth fundamental knowledge of the diverse areas of the discipline, combined with acquaintance with front-line research trends and developments in related field is the aim of postgraduate curricula. The curriculum should be designed in such a way, that after their postgraduate studies, students should be able to work directly in the applied field (industry or research institute) without any additional special training. After completing this curriculum the students should be able to take up the following responsibilities:

    1. Research at national, international level.
    2. Higher positions in biotech production units.
    3. Planning and policy making for Microbiology/ Biotechnology.
    4. Teaching at undergraduate / postgraduate level courses in Microbiology / Biotechnology.
To keep the syllabus relevant to national needs, the guidelines from CSIR and UGC curricula for research fellowship were taken into account. Syllabus reforms involved discussions with experts from educational institutes, research and industry as well as few past and present students.

M.Phil., MICROBIOLOGY
  1. The course, where a student is offered the opportunity to perform research under the supervision of a Ph.D. faculty mentor. The purpose of this course is to provide an additional learning experience by means of a structured project and by expanding the student's exposure to a particular area of Microbiology. By doing research projects the student has the opportunity to function in a different setting, gain additional (or new) experiences with a variety of instruments, listen to other viewpoints, and generally establish a certain degree of confidence in knowing that she/he can function in such a college/ non-college setting.
  2. The student will actively take part in a research project and work towards "first author" publications.
  3. To provide the student an opportunity to learn the mechanics of research and to obtain data.
Ph.D., Microbiology
  1. To impart the advanced scientific knowledge in microbiology, to  provide training opportunities in conducting state-of-the-art basic research in microbiology and closely related disciplines.
  2. To develop the Research skills and develop novel ideas in the field of   Microbiology
  3. To bring out solutions to various open problems and real challenges in the field of Microbiology
  4. To build a large set of avenues in the field of Microbiology
  5. To inculcate research ideas among scholars and to emulate them with new ideas
  6. To produce pool of researchers capable of employing contemporary tools to address emerging societal threats  such as rising food, waterborne diseases, bioterrorism, environmental contaminants, and new –generation microbial pathogens.
