Capability Enhancement Programme

Guidance for Competitive Examinations

The purpose of competitive exams is to filter students with the right aptitude for a said profession. Therefore simply mugging up the study material may not prove to be useful; it's important to have a strategy in place. Thus a well-charted plan is the need of the day, and this brings us to one of the important advantages of enrolling to a coaching class - guidance. Coaching classes can play a supportive role. They guide and orient the students in the right direction by familiarizing them with the range of content they must cover for the exams; help them to develop their skills and abilities by providing essential study material; through mock tests with model papers; and assessments of tests. Keeping all these basic needs our institution put valuable effort to train the students for various competitive examinations. UGC sponsored coaching classes for entry in services and coaching classes for UGC-NET examination were conducted to our students.
The Kamaraj Academy of Internship unit of our college trains our students for entry in Banking Services. Apart from these, individual departments initiate and conduct many coaching classes for their students regularly. For example, Department of Business Administration periodically conducts coaching classes for Bank Exams and Department of Mathematics conducts coaching classes for NET/SET examination on daily/weekly basis.

Career Counseling Cell

Career counseling can help in all the major milestones in one's career. Career Counseling involves scientifically developed aptitude tests and personality tests that helps a career counselor give the best suited career advice to the student based on his report of his aptitude and personality. Career counseling sessions helps the students to know the pros and cons of the different streams, courses and educational options and the career path it offers, thus the students can make an informed choice, and get a career assessment that helps avoid the risk of change in career path later in life. Choosing a career that matches one's aptitude and personality itself translates into professional success and popularity. The main aim of career counseling is to help students choose a field that is in tune with their skills and their job expectations.
To fulfill the objectives of career counseling, our institution periodically conducts various career awareness/training programmes in collaboration with agencies like Catalyst Education, Madurai, ICT Academy,Tamilnadu, The Ma Foi Foundation, Chennai and Rajiv Gandhi National Institute Of Youth Devolpment, Sriperumbudur. In order to make the students more suitable to their dream career, courses like Computerized accounting and Office Automation, Advanced Sericulture, Renewable Energy, Internet and Web Designing are conducted with the aid of University Grants Commission under the UGC-Scheme of Career Oriented Courses.

Soft Skill

Soft skills refer to a cluster of personal qualities, habits, attitudes that have the potential to make someone a good student and compatible with the requirements of academia. Put simply, they are the ways in which you talk, you move around, listen and present yourself. They are learned behaviors, which develop as a result of ones willingness and commitment to understanding the emotions of oneself and others. Soft skills are increasingly becoming the hard skills of today's work force. It's just not enough to be highly trained in technical skills, without developing the softer, interpersonal and relationship-building skills that help people to communicate and collaborate effectively. Nowadays, employers want more from employees, particularly those that qualify as graduates who possess a good amount of 'soft skills'. Soft skills are important for fine tuning the student's attitude to learning, motives, values and deal with different situations responsibly and diligently. First and foremost is to train the students to speak fluently in English. For this, the Department of English of our institution conducts a certificate course on "Communicative and Functional English" to the students.
On 30th Day of September 2016, our institution signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Redington Employability Academy for Development (READ) a Unit of Redington Corporate Social Responsibility, Chennai. The READ Centre is developed in our campus and is functioning in the MCA block. This year nearly 200 best out-going students (III UG, II PG, & III MCA) have been selected and training on Employability Skills have been imparted to the students. The Course was conducted in 90 hr duration to the students in batches from 10.10.2016 to 28.02.2017. Expert training faculties of READ handled the sessions. Most of the students trained in the READ programme have got their placements through campus recruitment organized by the Placement and Training Cell of our College. 95 students received placement orders. These students totally achieved 179 placement opportunities.

Remedial Coaching

A student learns at his own pace. Anybody cannot force a student to master a skill which is not commensurate to his abilities. In reality, there are students who fall behind in their basics and advancement of the subject which is not fully understood by them. This condition calls for remedial classes. Generally, students have an issue with major subjects like English, Mathematics and Science. Students can understand these subjects if the teacher takes a little care about them like attending to them personally and explaining the concept until they understand. Remedial classes are necessary for pupils who don't understand a subject properly. Therefore, individual departments identify slow learners and teach/train them in the Remedial classes in their weak area. In particular, all the self finance departments are conducting Remedial classes regularly from 4 p.m to 5 p.m for the slow learners. Apart from these, under the financial assistance of UGC, remedial classes were conducted to the slow learners during the 2013-2014.

Language Lab

English language lab was established in the year 2009. The aim of the language lab is to develop our students' communication skills. As our college is located in a rural area of South Tamil Nadu, we get students with low proficiency in English. The lab activities are designed keeping in mind the enhancement of the language skill of these students. Developing communication skill in English language is an art. So our language lab activities are based on phonetics, linguistics, literature and applied English. Our language training is aimed at enriching the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and getting advancement in Presentation skills, narrating skills, Group dynamics and Interview skills. They learn phrasal verbs and its usage. In the literature part, the students learn the communication skill by watching movies, videos of interviews, food preparations, and speeches of successful people, and so on available in English. Along with this they are exposed to problem solving techniques, and their overall personality in developed by screening motivational videos by successful entrepreneurs. In applied English, the students improve their spoken and written communication skills as a foundation for pursuing secondary professional skills. They learn the use of English language in communication by describing something, role play, mock presentation, mock interviews, and participating in group discussion. As result of these trainings our college students stand better chance of being placed in multi-national companies.

Bridge Course

The principle of The Bridge Intensive Course in English is to initiate English to the first year students of the degree course. It has experimental over the years that students who join the degree course face a lot of difficulties in learning their curriculum through the English language. With an inception of globalization it has become very important for the undergraduates to pursue their education in English, in order to struggle worldwide. Even to seek jobs in India, effective communication and a good knowledge in English is a fundamental requirement. In order to make the students get familiar with the essential rudiments of English grammar, the Department of English is conducting a Bridge course in the month of June of every year to the fresh undergraduate students of our institution.

Yoga Meditation

From first graders to college seniors, students may have youth on their side, but that doesn't mean their lives are pressure-free. Hours a day sitting at desk or computer monitor and more hours doing homework cause a young body to tense up. Social and family pressures and, unfortunately, anxiety, abuse and bullying also take their toll. It's therefore not surprising that educators are becoming increasingly interested in providing yoga classes at school. Stress is a major obstacle to academic achievement, and yoga's stress relief powers have been shown to boost student performance. Yoga has been shown to improve memory in both adults and children, a benefit that would seem certain to improve academic performance.
To emphasis the importance of yoga "International Yoga Day" is observed and celebrated every year in our campus and various competitions are conducted and an oath is taken on that day. Under the UGC-Scheme of Career Oriented Courses, our institution conducts "Yoga Meditation of Holistic Health" course to our students. To make some awareness on yoga among the students, Yoga is included in one of the units of Part V syllabus. Besides, for the benefit of the girls students in the hostel premises, Yoga coaching is given by a Women Yoga trainer.
